I've been going back and forth on this topic for months, and I still don't have a clean answer. That's probably a sign that anyone who does have a clean answer is oversimplifying.

The strongest argument in favor of AI-generated content is accessibility. Not everyone is a skilled writer, and not everyone can afford to hire one. A small business owner in a non-English-speaking country can now create a professional-sounding website. A first-generation college student can get help structuring an application essay. A startup founder can produce marketing materials without spending thousands on a copywriter.

Before AI, quality content was expensive. That created an uneven playing field where well-funded companies dominated search results and mind share simply because they could afford better writers. AI narrows that gap.

There's also an efficiency argument. Writers who use AI as a research and drafting tool produce more content in less time. That's not cheating any more than using a calculator is cheating at math. The tool handles the mechanical parts so the human can focus on strategy, voice, and expertise.

The case against AI content

The strongest counter-argument is about labor. AI models were trained on billions of words written by human beings — journalists, bloggers, academics, novelists — without compensation or consent. Those writers created the training data. Now AI produces content that competes with theirs, often in the same markets. There's something uncomfortable about that, even if it's legally permitted.

Content quality is another concern. The internet is already full of low-value pages built for SEO rather than readers. AI makes it trivially easy to produce this kind of content at massive scale. If you think the internet has a content quality problem now, imagine what happens when anyone can publish 100 articles a day.

And then there's deception. When a reader encounters an article that seems to come from a knowledgeable human, they extend a certain trust. If that article was actually generated by a machine with no real knowledge or experience, that trust is misplaced.

Where the line is (in my opinion)

AI as a tool in a human workflow: ethical. Using AI to brainstorm, draft, research, or edit — with a human making the final decisions about content and quality — is just using a tool. We don't have ethical debates about writers using spell-check, dictation software, or research databases. AI is a more powerful version of the same idea.

AI-generated content with human review and editing: mostly ethical. If a human with real expertise reviews, edits, and takes responsibility for AI-generated content, the output is a collaboration. The ethical weight depends on how much the human actually changes and how much expertise they bring.

Raw AI output published without review: problematic. Publishing AI-generated content without editing, fact-checking, or adding human expertise is irresponsible. Not because it's AI — because nobody is taking responsibility for accuracy.

AI content presented as human expertise: unethical. If a website says "written by Dr. Sarah Chen, cardiologist" and the article was actually generated by ChatGPT, that's deception. The reader is making trust decisions based on false information about the author's credentials.

AI content at scale to manipulate search rankings: unethical. Content farms that generate thousands of pages purely to capture search traffic aren't creating value. They're polluting the information ecosystem for profit.

The disclosure question

Should you tell readers that AI was involved in creating your content? Social norms haven't caught up with the technology yet.

Some arguments for disclosure: transparency builds trust, readers have a right to know, and norms need to start somewhere.

Some arguments against mandatory disclosure: we don't require disclosure of other tools (Grammarly, research assistants, editors), and a blanket "AI-generated" label doesn't distinguish between "AI wrote this while I watched" and "I wrote this and used AI to check for errors."

My position: disclose when AI was the primary author. Don't feel obligated when AI was one of several tools in a human-driven process.

The ethical conversation about AI content is really a conversation about responsibility. Who's responsible when AI publishes wrong medical information? Who's accountable when AI-generated content displaces human writers? Who decides what "enough" human involvement looks like?

These are questions we're going to be answering for years. The technology isn't going away, and pretending we can put it back in the box is naive. The productive path forward involves setting norms, building tools that make human-AI collaboration easier, and holding publishers responsible for what they put into the world.

In academic contexts, most institutions now classify submitting AI-generated work as your own as academic dishonesty. Outside academia, the question is less about plagiarism and more about transparency and quality.
